MP3 Player Storage Capacities Tips

How Many Videos Can a 40GB MP3 Player Hold?

Shopping.com Tip: 40GB is a LOT of storage, and a 40GB MP3 player like the Coby 40GB MP3 player with a 7" LCD screen can hold up to 50 hours of video.

Another great 40GB MP3 player with video capability is the Toshiba Gigabeat F40. Reviews speak highly of its clear, sharp screen and video quality.

The average movie is two hours in length, so this means you can store roughly 25 movies on your digital media player.

If you have a combination of movies and songs, then obviously this number goes down. However, it is easy to transfer movies between your PC and your 40GB MP3 player so you keep the ones on hand that you most want to view.

Some players claim that they can hold more than they actually can, so it is best to ask about the format if claims seem a bit exaggerated.

How Many Videos Does the 80GB Apple iPod Video Hold?

The world's most popular video-capable MP3 player is still the Apple iPod Video, which now comes in an 80GB version.

80GB of storage is what a typical PC had several years back, and can store up to 100 hours of videos (roughly 50 movies), up to 20,000 songs or up to 25,000 photos - or a combination of the three.

The video capacity number is based on the use of H.264 1.5-Mbps encoded video at 640-by-480 resolution combined with 128-Kbps audio.

It is a significant innovation that 80GB of memory can be stored in such a small and portable package!

How Many Songs Does 512MB of Memory Hold?

Shopping.com Tip: A common memory capacity found when purchasing flash-based MP3 players is 512MB.

Although the song carrying capacity can vary, as every song has a different length, a general rule of thumb is that a 512MB MP3 player can hold roughly 120 songs or approximately  eight hours of music.  If the format is changed to WMA - it can hold 16 hours of music.

This size is perfect for an entry level MP3 player for a teen, or middle aged person who just wants to use it during workouts at the gym.

MP3 Players That Allow Extra Memory to be Added

If you anticipate wanting to add more songs to your player in the future, then it is prudent to purchase an MP3 player that has a slot for additional memory.

Prices for SD cards are falling daily, and MP3 players with expansion slots are still plentiful, although not as much of a necessity due to the plethora of hard drive-based players on the market.  Today, you can purchase a 1GB SD card for roughly $80 or less and a 256MB card is less than $30.

Some great MP3 players with expansion slots include the Sandisk Sansa, the Sharp Papyrus, the Rio Cali and the MobiBlu A3 and A5.

Should You Choose a Larger or Smaller Memory MP3 Player?

Shopping.com Tip: Before selecting the memory size you want for your MP3 player, it makes sense to take a few minutes and decide how you plan to use your player.  If you will use it only when working out, and work out for around two hours at a stretch - then a less expensive 256MB MP3 player with roughly four hours worth of music will more than meet your needs.

If you are a true music addict, and want to have your MP3 player in your ear 24-7, then you will want to spring for a more expensive 20-40GB MP3 player.

Video and picture data also consume a great deal of memory, so if you plan to use your player to display either photos or video, it is best to purchase a 20 GB MP3 player at a minimum.

Where Can You Find a Great 128MB MP3 Player?

Shopping.com Tip: If you don't want to run around with earbuds in all the time and only want to listen to a few favorites, the most cost effective way to go is with a 128MB MP3 player.

These players are also much more compact and easy to carry than players with large hard drives on board, as they use silicon-based flash memory.

One highly rated 128MB MP3 player is the MuVo from Creative Labs.  This player has a built-in FM tuner, and can double as a flash drive to store PC files, as well.

It is very simple to use, so makes a perfect entry level device.  It also features a built-in USB connector, so you don't have to fumble with external cables.

It's priced between $60 and $80, and runs off one AAA battery.  It holds up to two hours MP3 music, or four hours of WMA music.

Add More Music to the MP3 Player in Your Mobile Phone with Dave

Shopping.com Tip: If carrying a phone, a 20GM mp3 player, a coffee, an umbrella and a newspaper is too much for you, consider consolidating your items - at least the electronic ones. If you want to use your phone as your one main electronic device that stores all your contacts, data, AND music, you are in luck.  Seagate has just introduced a portable hard drive that connects to your mobile phone using Bluetooth technology and comes as a 10GB or 20GB mp3 player.

It also has a USB and a WiFi connection, and is compact enough to fit in your shirt pocket.

It runs roughly $200, and has up to 10 hours continuous use battery life.

DAVE stands for Digital Audio Video Experience.
